Se esiste, nella musica, un artista che abbia davvero incarnato la parola "genio", questo è Frank Zappa. Burbero, schivo e con la sigaretta perennemente accesa in bocca, Zappa aveva capito che la musica è come un maiale, non si butta via nulla. Questo spiega, da un lato, la sua sterminata discografia e, dall'altro, l'imprevedibilità dei suoi dischi. "We're only in it..." introduce di fatto il concetto di collage-music, un calderone di suoni che spaziano dal jazz al country, dal cabaret alla musica sinfonica, dai Beatles alla cacofonia più devastante. Il tutto condito da un'ironia strabordante e da una pungente critica sociale al movimento hippy, allora all'apice, del quale Zappa aveva già messo in luce le più cocenti contraddizioni. I Residents imparano la lezione e ringraziano.
Più che un disco, un trattato di sociologia satirica. Una pietra miliare.
